We will learn...
Dance in Water
We will learn to move in water without fighting, without effort. To propel without swimming, instead, sensing the water and letting it dance our bodies. We will learn to relax in water and help each other release the tensions that we are used to carry in our bodies. Being with what is already there, dancing from the present sensations, with no ideas about how the dance should be.
We want to share our passion for dancing in water. The developmental side of it, the therapeutical side of it, and the artistic side. Teaching dance in water, we suggest principles and ideas, and we invite to play with this principles, so then each one can develop an unique dance. As a result, you will gain a sense of incredible freedom while being in the Sea, or any other waters. You will become friend with water, even more than you have been before. You will release fears connected with being underwater, and you will be able to pass much longer time without an urge to breathe. You will find your inner fluidity and sense of peacefulness expressed through your movement. So you can recognize, remember this state, and you will know the way to come back to it.
Contact Improvisation is a unique freestyle dance form that explores the body’s connection to the world. An open-ended exploration of the kinesthetic possibilities of bodies moving. Sometimes wild and athletic, sometimes quiet and meditative, it is a form open to all bodies, changing from moment to moment and dance to dance, as a result of the physicalities of those meeting.
Contact Improvisation manifests in different ways depending on accidents of physics and the present of those participating. It is a dance that fine tunes your senses and wakes up your ability to listen and respond to what is happening in the moment. This dance practice explores the skills of falling, rolling, counterbalance, lifting using minimal effort, how to make ourselves light when being lifted, centering and breathing techniques, and responsiveness to our partners and surroundings. Is an honoring of every moment. When Body, Mind, and Spirit are united in their instinctive wisdom one finds oneself at home in every moment expressing one's true nature.
Authentic Movement is an expressive improvisational movement practice that allows a group of participants a type of free association of the body. Is a process grounded in the relationship between a mover and a witness. The work is centered in the development of the inner witness, which is one way of understanding the development of consciousness.
In this discipline the inner witness is externalized, embodied by a person who is called the outer witness. Another person, called the mover, embodies the moving self. With a longing to be seen in the presence of a witness, a person moves into the emptiness with eyes closed. The mover discovers an infinite range of physical movement, sensation, emotion, and thought as embodied experiences happen into consciousness.
In this process, there is a discovery of movement that is authentic, truthful. Because language bridges experience from body to consciousness, the mover and the witness speak, within their developing relationship, after every round of work, each intending toward the demanding practice of clear articulation.
Practices to enhance our wellbeing, restore our energies and balance ourselves. Bodywork is also a tool for developing self awareness, by giving and receiving.
We will explore touch as a therapeutic tool, mainly following guidelines based on Zen Shiatsu. This is a holistic practice based in the stimulation or sedation of the body energy lines, called meridians. Overall, we will learn to give a gentle and pleasant touch to relieve tensions in the soft tissues, and bring a a state of relaxation.
Breathing and Freediving
Freediving is a form of underwater diving that relies on the ability to hold the breath until resurfacing.
This retreat is not at focused on this practice. However, we will share some basic and fundamental freediving knowledge. This knowledge will greatly enrich and deepen our relation with the water.
We will learn about the natural breathing process and hopefully change dysfunctional patterns, we will also learn how being immersed in water affects us, and what changes provoques in us.
Why to develop body awareness?
There is the tendency in our age to confuse perception and evaluation. A tendency to experience through judgment and comparison.
Such tendency leads to not appreciate what is there. The experience easily turns into a projection of what is missing. The awareness of what is Here and Now is lost on behalf of a foreign image or idea of what it is assumed should be.
The experience of ourselves, our body, movements, thoughts, emotions, through this lens usually comes in hand with a feeling of dissatisfaction and incompleteness. We lose the opportunity to taste and enjoy ourselves. The experience of water through this lens comes in hand with the earthly patterns, and then we lose the opportunity to fully embody our Aquatic self.
Meet your facilitators...
Around three years ago Mario and Sasha invited those who were exploring dance in water to meet in Dahab, Egypt. During 2 months they experimented and explored dancing underwater, on a breath hold. Since that event until today, they have been practicing, researching and deepening that experience.
This approach unifies their experiences and explorations on Contact Improvisation in Water with those in Freediving. It has been informing the way they practice and the way they teach Contact Improvisation in water. Recently they began to share it, teaching it to other people, and in order to name their work, and differentiate it from CI in water, they decided to call it Ocean Dance.
Ocean Dance is not just about dancing, is mainly about developing a relation, allowing an integration with the water element to take place. In this conception, water is not just a material substance. Water is to be accepted as a symbol full of meanings, including the physical and emotional transformations that causes on us. Accepting and Acknowledging these transformations is what allows us to be embodied in water.
